The orange tree was already here when we arrived.
Every year, it reminds us that some things grow quietly until one day they become impossible to ignore. In winter, it hangs heavy with fruit — bright oranges against dark green leaves.
Then spring arrives. The ground beneath it slowly disappears under a carpet of white blossom: thousands of flowers, delicate and short-lived, covering the garden for a few brief weeks.
And the scent. It is impossible to talk about the tree without talking about the scent.
Just beside it, a jasmine does its best to compete. Every evening, the two seem to battle for control of the garden. Some days the jasmine wins. Other days the orange blossom. Most of the time, nobody keeps score — the whole garden smells wonderful anyway.
Over the years, the tree has grown larger than we ever expected. Large enough to reach the upstairs windows. If you open the bedroom window, its branches seem to lean in to say hello — like an old friend who no longer waits to be invited.
The children have grown up with it. We've watched the seasons change through it: blossom, fruit, shade, fallen petals, and then blossom again. Year after year. Steady. Generous. Always there.
For a few weeks each spring, Villa S smells almost entirely of orange blossom.
The rest of the year, the tree remains. Waiting patiently for its moment.
